Something that has always taunted my fitness goals is my love of drinking. Yes... I, Cheeze, love to drink. (Editor's Note: I feel you Cheeze). Call me what you want but as a college student it is completely socially acceptable. However, because I place so much emphasis on the gym, I think it's important to know what effects alcohol has on the body. First, alcohol is its own macro nutrient (protein, fat, carb, ethanol). When alcohol is consumed your body focuses all its attention on metabolizing it. Meaning that big greasy burger you ate along with those 6 beers is just gonna have to wait.. and wait..and wait, for your body to finish metabolizing all that ethanol (alcohol). This in turn is why people get fat or a beer gut. Alcohol also is not an ideal source of fuel in terms of building muscle. When you drink, the ethanol completely inhibits protein synthesis which is what makes your muscle grow. It also... As you know dehydrates the living hell out of you, and as we know, your muscles are 70% water. Adding all these elements up, alcohol is not the "go to" supplement when trying to add muscle. I'm not trying to scare you away from drinking, everything is ok in moderation, you have to be the one that decides if your choices outside of the gym will reap benefits for the work you put on the inside.
